APN: running care and consulting in one business
As an advanced practice nurse you do two very different things. You deliver tariffed care services — and you advise, teach, accompany projects. Both halves are part of your work. They just don't fit into the same system.
Two halves, two completely different processes
Care is transactional. Assignment, service, tariff, billing file, health insurer. Always the same route, dictated by the tariff. That is what care systems are built for.
Consulting is a client relationship. An enquiry, a conversation, a quote, a mandate running for months, an hourly rate, an invoice, follow-up work. No tariff, no allocation, no service position.
A care system knows no quote, no hourly rate, no project and no contract attached to a contact. It cannot represent this half — and it doesn't have to.
Why your accountant doesn't close this gap
They book after the fact. They don't write a quote to a home-care organisation, don't track project hours and don't maintain a client relationship. What's left in practice is an Excel list next to a Word document — for exactly the part of the business that is taxable.
The threshold you can't afford to miss
Tariffed care is exempt from VAT. Consulting, teaching and projects usually are not. And only taxable turnover counts towards VAT liability.
In other words: you become liable for VAT as soon as your consulting turnover exceeds CHF 100,000 — your care doesn't count towards it. Without separate revenue accounts, that moment is often noticed after the fact, and retroactively.
How the two halves come together
The consulting half lives in bexio, and it lives there fully: contacts with contracts and reminders, quotes in your own document design, stored services and individual hourly rates, project hours you can invoice directly, invoices at the correct VAT rate — in German, French or Italian.
CuraSovo makes sure the care half arrives there too. The billing file your care system sends to the insurer anyway becomes an entry in the same accounts — on its own revenue account, cleanly separated from consulting.
On top of that comes everything else a business needs: receipts photographed with the bexio Go app and read automatically, supplier invoices by email straight into processing, automatic bank reconciliation, VAT reporting at the push of a button. No paper, no folders, no media breaks.
What you get out of it
You see how your business is doing as you go — not only in spring. You spot the VAT threshold before you cross it. Your accountant gets access to the same books and finds everything for the year-end and for advice, without seeing treatment details or diagnoses. And if the consulting side grows, the system grows with it — right through to payroll on the day you hire someone.

Frequently asked
Do I really need bexio as an APN?
Not for tariffed care. But for everything else — quotes, hourly rates, projects, VAT, year-end — you need a business system, and your care software isn't one.
How do I keep care and consulting cleanly apart?
Through separate revenue accounts. CuraSovo books tariffed services to a dedicated account, your consulting invoices go to another one in bexio. Both streams stay visible separately at any time.
When do I become liable for VAT?
As soon as taxable turnover exceeds CHF 100,000. Tariffed care doesn't count towards it.
Can my accountant work in the system?
Yes. You invite them into your bexio account. They see the books — and no treatment details.
